Stuff From Our Friends

Alright folks, it’s time we let you in on something. We’ve got some amazingly talented friends. It’s not a real secret or anything, but for our 306th post, we thought we’d share something a little special and close to our hearts. Not all of these tracks are in our normal posting genre, but hey, we’re feeling a little crazy and want to show some love to our friends.
SASS
One of my favourite girls in the world, SASS (aka Ashley Daw) is an up-and-coming female “electronic nu rapper” based out of Montreal, QC. She’s one of the hardest working people I’ve met and puts out new tracks on the regular. She often partners with local producers and DJs, and hosts her own event Leg Work at the Blue Dog Motel which has featured the likes of K-OS and Jenocide. Watching her perform gives you’re libido a burst of energy and is sure to make you feel all the right things in all the right places. Get to know her by checking out her debut track My Name is SASS (especially the remixes by our friends Poolside and Physical Patrick) and her most recent track GNO (Girls Night Out) below.
A fellow blogger at WRG Magazine, check out her recent interview with Penguin Prison here. We’ll see you in Montreal soon girl!
GHETTOSOCKS
JUNO-nominated Grand Wizzard Ghettosocks is really one of a kind. An amazingly talented rapper, DJ and graffiti artist hailing from Halifax, NS, Ghettosocks, aka Darren Pyper, recently took home the Rap/Hip Hop Single of the Year Award for his track Don’t Turn Around (feat. Edgar Allen Floe) at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards. Also known for his recent project TwinPeaks, a partnership with fellow rapper Muneshine, Ghettosocks is seriously one of the most talented freestylists I have ever met.
Check out his video for Don’t Turn Around below.
PHYSICAL PATRICK
Longtime friend Physical Patrick, aka Pat Dunn, has been producing as long as I’ve known him and longer. Video editor, producer, and DJ, the kid’s got mad skills. More into the electro, techno and ambient house sounds, Physical Patrick’s SoundCloud is full of crunchy remixes, mixtapes and originals. Check out his remix of Martin Solveig’s Hello, which he entered into the “Hello” remix contest on BeatPortal a few months ago.

EVERYTHING’S AUTOMATIC
We met Everything’s Automatic (Nick Jackson) DJing at Yung Dumb late last year, where he showcased his original work in the emotronic field. We later found out he was also our neighbour. Super chill, minimal and ambient, Nick is a super talented dude who we will soon be bribing to come over and show us some of his tricks in Ableton. Be sure to check out some of his sets on SoundCoud, and have a listen to Piano (anywhere) below.

DEBONAIR DUKE
New on the scene, DJ Debonair Duke (aka Tony White) sent us this Night Exchange mixtape which features some straight up nu disco and indie dance bangas. Residing in Nova Scotia, we’re expecting to hear more from this kid real soon.

LARGE LIVE N’ DIRECT
Hip hop artists Large, Live n’ Direct (Jamie Piercey, Andrew Lahey & Matt Murphy) have massive talent. I remember listening to Andrew singing happy birthday at a party last summer and being absolutely blown away by his talent (I mean who besides Marilyn Monroe can make happy birthday sound sexy?). Have a listen to their latest work on BandCamp and support by purchasing.
WORKER
For a long time everyone was telling me how talented of a producer Worker was, and after DJing a set with him a few weeks ago, I definitely believe them. Heavy bass and filthy, dirty beats. Get down.

PATCH
Friend Patch (aka Ryan Green) killed it for me with his really good remix of local group The Subtitles’ track Really Good. It’s really good.

THAT MEXICAN DJ
That Mexican DJ is, well, our favourite Mexican DJ friend. From Cancun, Mexico, Manuel Freyre specializes in high energy sets ranging from electro, house, and dubstep to top 40, and has opened for a ton of big names including Global DJs and Hatiras. We also share a love for Moombahton. Check out some of his Bedroom Sessions mixtapes on SoundCloud.
NU ROCK
Lance Wicks has been DJing and partnering with Nu Rock since they both first started mixing in 2005. Nominated for East Coast DJ of the Year, DJ Nu Rock is one of the most well known and sought after DJs in our area. Check out some of his mashups and remixes on his Facebook BandPage.
I also want to shout out to all the other local DJs and people we’ve worked with, including Poolside (of Yung Dumb), Casper Touch (who put out one of our Ten Tracks), Dr. Drake, AVP, the Shinning Wizards, Sina, Big Frank, Dirty Blonde, Brrrat, Envy, Krystle Hayden, Headquarters, and so many more. Also, lotta love for our local indie bands who are ripping up the scene and giving the A1C a good name including Hey Rosetta!, Grammercy Riffs, Matthew Hornell, Baytown, Repartee, the Brothers Lloyd, the Comuppins, and I’m probably forgetting 1000 more (sorry if we missed anyone).
So much love for everyone listed. Big hearts.
